Thin Film PV Industry Enters a New Era in July

Bettina Weiss, Executive Director The thin-film PV industry will cross a major industry milestone as technology roadmaps, government funding opportunities and supply chain collaboration issues converge at the North American PV Fab Managers Forum, held in conjunction with Intersolar North America on July 11. The forum will bring together CIGS and CdTe manufacturers with equipment and materials suppliers to identify critical manufacturing needs and determine meaningful action items to accelerate industry growth. For most attendees, this will be their introduction to the Department of Energy SunShot program, slated to spend over $100 million over the next five years, and to the new Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC). For everyone else, the event may mark the beginning of a new era of technology roadmaps and industry collaboration as critical components of innovation in the PV industry. (more)

U.S. Congressional Update: As the budget ax swings, hope remains for solar priorities
By Jamie Girard, SEMI
The release of the House Energy & Water spending bill signals that PV Group's spending priorities are going to continue to face tough challenges in getting funding in the current sour budget environment.

SEMI Publishes Two New PV Standards on Silicon Feedstock and Chemical Quality
By James Amano, SEMI
Two new PV standards to specify silicon feedstock and to address nitric acid chemical quality were approved during the Spring 2011 meetings. These two new standards bring the total of published SEMI Standards to 17, and there are over 25 additional PV standardization efforts are underway.

Good Enough is Better than Best for Solar Modules
By Lux Research
Reduced costs - not increased performance - will largely drive solar module-makers' adoption of new non-active materials technologies.

Getting a Clear Picture of Japan's Energy Situation Through Data Resources
By Joe Berwind and Alex Papathomas, AEI
